We Hate to Move It, Move It!

Originally posted July 3/2007 on "Allison Wonderland"

Have I mentioned in the last 5 minutes that we really, really don't like moving? Not like exercising (though I'm not a big fan of that, either)- like moving one's accumulated stuff from one home to another.

We have to do it, though, and soon. The good things about this apartment (big kitchen, lovely yard, windows... that's about it) definitely don't outweigh the bad stuff. The tiny bathroom... the plumbing problems... Clompie Stomperson... the horrendous heat bills in the winter... the non-openingness of most of said windows...

And now we've got the most important reason of all to get the heck out of Dodge. Simon's been dealing with off-and-on runny noses (well, just the one nose... multiple runnings) for ages. I thought that it was just normal for a kid to get sick as he adjusts to being exposed to other kids, but I'm not so sure. AJ noticed a while ago that Simon seems to get stuffy when he's in his bedroom; he wakes up with a runny schnoz a lot. And yesterday it was running like our bathtub faucet (ie a lot)... and we'd been playing in his room all day.

Is it an allergy? Maybe... I'm just glad it's not the cats- they're not allowed in Simon's room. So what is it? There's a lot of moisture at that end of the house; in fact, we have to keep a dehumidifier running in Simon's room most of the year. Humidity is supposed to be good for a stuffy nose, isn't it? Unless it's leading to the growth of mould (mold?)... or nose-infesting bacteria...

I'm not a germophobe. I hate antibacterial cleaners, hand soaps, etc, and I think they do more harm than good. So I don't think I'm overreacting if I'm concerned that something in my kid's room is making him sick- or stuffy, anyway.

What do you do about this? Can you get this stuff tested? Should I bleach the hell out of his walls and pour boiling water on the carpet? We're moving anyway, but not until we can afford to, which will be at least a few months.

And no, we don't have room to move Simon's crib into our room in the meantime. I thought of that.
